AMD laptop graphics cards

Andrzej Pająk

AMD's graphics cards for laptops are very popular, more so than their CPUs. In fact, they are so popular that Apple has started using them in their MacBook Pros.

As of today the most powerful AMD cards are Radeons from the RX 5000M (and Pro) series. The whole family is based on Navi 14 and Navi 10 architecture, which replaced Polaris in 2019/2020. We can find it in its most powerful version - RX 5600M (GDDR6) from 2020 - in gaming computers such as Dell G5 SE. Another powerful, and more recent Radeon model, the Radeon Pro 5500M (HBM2) powers the 16" MacBook Pros, while the RX 5500M does the same for MSI Alphas.

You have to hand it to AMD, their best cards always rank high in tests, coming close behind NVIDIA's GTX 1650 (RX 5500M) and 1650Ti (RX 5600M).

All of the above cards are the cream of the crop of laptop graphics cards. However, if you choose a computer with an RX 580, or even an RX 570 you are guaranteed to be able to play even the more graphically demanding games in high resolution, ultra details and anti-aliasing turned on. They perform better than, let's say, NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti.

The RX series includes also some less powerful models like the RX 640. Don't expect too much of it, as it's more or less on the same level as NVIDIA's GeForce MX150 from 2017.
